Call for Performer-Collaborators: 2-Week Development Workshop
Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre is seeking performer-collaborators for a 2-week devised creation workshop. We will accept submissions from both Equity and non-Equity performers.
Workshop Description
In 2015, Calgary exists at the epicentre of some of humanity’s biggest existential challenges. As Canada’s energy capital, it is a major driver of the global carbon economy and has a staggering concentration of wealth. Our way of life – cars, clothes, food, buildings, investments – contributes to climate change, violent conflict, unsafe worker conditions and other horrific abuses of humanity and ecology.
In this workshop, we are interested in identifying our complicity in complex global challenges and exploring how we react to that complicity. The creation process will integrate mask, physical improvisation, research, writing and discussion. This creation process will culminate in a free public performance; the generated materials will be used to develop an original theatre production, slated to premiere in Spring 2016.
Process
The creation process will be physically demanding. We are looking for actors with experience or a strong interest in physical theatre, mask work and devised theatre. The process requires actors who are keen to explore an individual creation process but who also work well within a guided group dynamic.
Timeline
Actors must be available August 4-16, 2015, inclusive, for a full-time workshop.
Submission/Audition Process
If you are available and interested in the project, please send a short cover letter expressing your interest, summarizing any relevant physical theatre, devised theatre and/or mask experience along with your CV and headshot to info@swallowabicycle.com. Application deadline is Monday, May 25, 2015 at 6:00 pm.
Successful applicants will be contacted for group auditions on Monday, June 1, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 pm. The auditions will consist of ensemble movement; come dressed in clothing/footwear appropriate for moving.
Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre is an equal opportunity employer and encourages submissions from performers of all cultural backgrounds.
Equity members will be seen first at all audition calls. Equity members in this workshop will be engaged under an Equity form of contract. CAEA members: please bring your membership card to the audition.
