A celebration of global oral traditions and storytelling, featuring Anna Lupeko, Mera Reyes, Sam Obadero, Sam Kugbiyi and Ishani Hemant.
In every culture, long before the printed word, radio waves, or digital screens, there was storytelling. Stories were passed down through the elders’ breath, drum rhythms, and the memories of the town or city. They shaped identities, preserved knowledge, and held communities together.
In today’s world, where isolation, displacement, and cultural erasure threaten many communities, storytelling remains a radical but forgotten act of connection. It affirms who we are, where we come from, and what we carry forward. They remind us that while our languages, identity and landscapes may differ, our longing for meaning, belonging, and continuity is universal.
Echoes Across the Flames is an invitation to gather around this ancient fire—to listen, feel, remember and reconnect. It celebrates the power of oral tradition as a living, breathing art form that transcends borders.
This event creates space for diverse audiences, especially racialised and immigrant communities in Calgary, to see themselves reflected on stage, and to witness the beauty of other traditions with open hearts.
Echoes Across the Flames will take place in Mohkinstsis, the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) name for the place we now call Calgary, located in the Treaty 7 region and the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (including the Siksika, Piikani and Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Iyarhe Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to Districts 5 and 6 of the Métis Nation of Alberta’s Battle River Territory. We’re grateful to the past, present and future stewards of this land.
